RV dump station FAQ
How long can you leave waste in an RV black tank?
Keep the black valve closed at a campsite and dump when the tank is ready; do not let waste dry out or sit unattended.
Short answer
There is no single safe number of days for every RV black tank. Keep the black-tank valve closed while connected at a campsite so liquid can build up, use the water and treatment amount recommended for your system, and dump when the tank is adequately filled or before it becomes a storage problem. Avoid leaving a full tank unattended or allowing solids to dry onto the tank walls.
What to keep in mind
- Use the tank level and your RV manufacturer's guidance rather than an arbitrary calendar deadline.
- Add water after dumping if the manufacturer recommends it, especially before storing the RV.
- Inspect for leaks, odors, or a stuck valve before extending the interval between dumps.
