My RV black tank won't drain. What can I do to unclog it?
Start with the hose, valve, and connection; stop before forcing pressure or tools into a tank you cannot inspect.
Short answer
Start by confirming the sewer hose is connected, supported, and not kinked, then check that the black-tank valve handle actually moves the valve. Do not force compressed air, high-pressure water, or improvised rods into the tank because they can damage seals, fittings, or the tank. If a built-in flush or manufacturer-approved rinse does not help, stop and call an RV technician or licensed waste service.
What to keep in mind
- Keep the valve closed until the hose and receiving inlet are secured.
- Look for a full or collapsed hose, a stuck gate valve, or a cap that was removed before the hose was attached.
- Treat leaks, bulging tanks, strong sewer odors, or failed valves as reasons to stop immediately.
